Speak (Laurie Halse Anderson)

Speak is a about a girl, Melissa, that is a normal girl until she went to a party the summer before her ninth grade year. Most of the book takes place at her school, in a closet she found, to be alone in. The book teaches you that you should have a close relationship with your parents and that it's important to speak up when something is wrong. The author wrote this to entertain readers. Melissa used to be a normal girl with lots of friends but once she went to this party, got raped, she became quiet, couldn't speak up, and lost all her friends. Rachel, one of her old friends, starts dating Andy, the boy that raped Melissa. Melissa tried to tell her what happened, making everything worse so she gave up. In the end, she spoke up and made friends again. The genre is realistic fiction.
